College of Humanities Graduation Reception
Convocation Livestream
The College of Humanities Convocation ceremony will recognize Baccalaureate, Master's
and Doctoral Degree Candidates for their degrees and honors earned. Diploma covers
are presented at this time to each graduate. All graduates are required to wear the
appropriate cap and gown during the ceremony.
Graduates should plan to arrive at the Jon M. Huntsman Center at 7:30am. The ceremony begins promptly at 8:00am and is expected to last approximately 1 hour and 45 mins.
Please bring a pen or pencil to print your name on the name card as you want it read and pronounced. Both sides of the card must be completely filled out. The reverse side of the card is used by the photographer.
Baccalaureate Degree Candidates
Please go directly to your seats in the sections marked within the Huntsman Center and as directed by the ushers. All graduates should be in their seats no later than 7:30am. We advise that all graduates bring items that can fit in your pocket. Please do not leave items behind, because after your name is read, you will be directed to the reseating sections.
Doctoral and M.F.A Degree Candidates
Please enter through the tunnel entrance and staff will have you form two lines to
march in the processional. Candidates for doctoral and M.F.A. degrees will carry their
hood over their right arm and will be hooded when the degree is awarded. At the end
of the ceremony, please stand and follow the faculty in the recessional out the West
tunnel.
Master Degree Candidates
Please enter through the main concourse level through sections B & C (portal 3) and go directly to your seats in the section in green on map marked within the Huntsman Center arena floor and as directed by the ushers. Candidates for master's degrees will wear their hoods with their gowns. At the end of the ceremony, please stand and follow the faculty in the recessional out the West tunnel.
Photographs
A commercial photographer will be present to photograph all candidates. You will be asked to fill out name cards for the photographer, but you are under no obligation to purchase pictures. Family and friends may take additional photographs as desired. Photographer Website.
Honors at Graduation
You may pick up an honor cord the week of April 28 within room 2100 LNCO. Please bring in a copy of your unofficial transcript to verify your honors GPA.
Diplomas
Diploma covers are presented during the ceremony. Diplomas are mailed to student graduates within three months of graduation. You may submit a request to the Graduation Office to list your preferred name on your diploma at graduation@sa.utah.edu in writing by the last day of classes for the semester the student is expecting to graduate.
Cap & Gown Orders
Student graduates can pay for and pick up graduation regalia at the University's Bookstore's Grad Fair, April 4 - April 6. Go to the University Campus Bookstore for additional information.
Guests
Tickets are not required. Guests can sit in sections that are not already reserved. The ceremony will be live-streamed so other family and friends can tune in virtually.

Jon M. Huntsman Center ADA Access
Guests needing ADA access to the Huntsman Center may have someone drop them off directly in front of the Huntsman center on the South half-circle. All the shuttles will be lift-equipped. No passes or permits are needed during Convocation. Guest Seating: Guests will enter the Huntsman Center on the second level. As guests enter each portal, wheelchair cutouts are located in each section of the arena in row 31, concourse level. They are available on a first-come basis. There is NO accessible seating at floor level. Strollers and walkers are not allowed into the arena seating areas, nor are they allowed in any wheelchair cutouts. They may be stored at the ticket counter near Portal 23. More information can be found here.

Honors at Graduation
Honors are determined within each college as follows:
- Summa Cum Laude is conferred upon bachelors degree students whose cumulative GPA ranks them in the top 1% of the graduating class of each college based on a five year average of the top 1% in that college.
- Magna Cum Laude is conferred upon bachelors degree students whose cumulative GPA ranks them in the next 2.5% of the graduating class of each college based on a five year average of the next top 2.5% of that college.
- Cum Laude is conferred upon bachelors degree students whose cumulative GPA ranks them in the next 4.5% of the graduating class of each college based on a five year average of the next top 4.5% of that college.
You may pick up an honor cord the week of May 1st within room 2100 LNCO. Please bring in a copy of your unofficial transcript.
How can you earn engagement cords?
If you have participated in activities from 2 of the following categories:
- Research - anything outside of coursework (UROP, UCUR, OUR, SPUR, published an article, presented at a conference, etc.)
- Internship - completed an internship during your time as a student
- Community Engagement/Activism - service in or engagement with communities or participation in activism activities in conjunction with your degree (Bennion Center, CEL Humanities course, volunteer language tutoring, etc.).
- Leadership - Leadership position in Humanities (department student orgs, Humanities student council, etc.)
What is the Sustainability Pledge?
In conjunction with the Graduation Pledge Alliance, the College of Humanities seeks to build a global community committed to social and environmental responsibility in the workplace and through individual action to build a healthy, sustainable, and just world. The Sustainability Pledge asks individuals to consider the impacts their job and lifestyle has on society and the environment and encourages them to improve both of these aspects through individual and collective actions.
Those who commit to The Sustainability Pledge can pick up a green cord to wear at commencement and convocation to symbolize their commitment. Pledgers will be recognized at the College of Humanities' Convocation.
