Spring 2026 Undergraduate Research Awards


 

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)

The Office of Undergraduate Research selects scholars to receive a stipend for working with a faculty mentor on research. Students complete a proposal to apply for this award. Spring 2026 award winners and faculty mentors in the College of Humanities:

Matthew Benich is a double major in Classics and Linguistics and will be working with faculty mentor Aaron Kaplan (Linguistics) on a project titled An Acoustic Analysis of the Vowel Inventory of Bolognese.

Camilla Cloward is a senior pursuing a double major in Middle East Studies and Political Science and is working with faculty mentor Annie Fukushima (Ethnic, Gender, and Disability Studies) on a project titled The Use of Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War in the Palestine/Isreal Conflict.

Sam Ivie is pursuing a major in History and is working with faculty mentor Matt Basso (History) on a project titled Utah's Public Sector Unions: An Historical Exploration.

Natalia Lopez who is working toward a Bachelor of University Studies in Humanities and Latino/a/x Studies, is working with faculty mentor Ed Muñoz (Ethnic, Gender, and Disability Studies) on a project titled Latinx Criminal Justice Professionals: Exploring Career Motivations through Historical Research.

Nathan Mclaughlin, a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies, will collaborate with faculty mentor Brandon Peterson (World Languages and Cultures) on a project titled The Book of Mormon as Anti-American Literature.

Millie Young, who is working toward majors in Criminology and Political Science, is working with faculty mentor Leandra Hernandez (Communication) on a project titled The Influence of Exclusionary Attitudes in Hierarchical Institutions: A Department of War Case Study.

Katherine Berensen is studying Philosophy of Science and Biology and is researching Challenging Categorical Thinking in Biology with mentor Matt Haber (Philosophy). Katherine was awarded the Francis Family Scholarship for spring 2026. 

Francis Family Scholarship

The Francis Family Scholarship awards scholarships to students conducting a third semester of research with the same faculty mentor in a spring semester.
