Humanities Ambassador Spotlight | Hana Butterworth

Q: Why did you choose to become an ambassador for the College of Humanities?
A: It’s a good way for me to share the impact and importance of humanities. I was excited to show people something that I love!

Q: What are your major(s) and/or minor(s)? Why did you choose them, what do you love most about them, and what do you hope to do with them once you graduate?
A: Comparative Literature, Religion, and Classics. I chose them because my mom inspired me. I love how in depth the classes go into philosophy and thought, and I want to be a lawyer.

Q: When you have to lock in and study for a hard test or write a long paper, what is your go-to method for staying focused and pushing through?
A: I sit on the couch, throw on a show I’ve seen a hundred times, grab some pickles, and get to work.

Q: Where is the best place to go get food on or around campus?
A: Sergio’s, the pizza truck near the library.

Q: What do you think your most unique hobby is? Why do you love it?
A: I love playing the harp! It’s what I grew up with and I love it.

Q: In what way(s) do you feel “at home” at the University of Utah?
A: The friends and connections I’ve made make me feel at home.

Q: What is the earliest or latest class you’ve ever had? What about that class made it worth getting up so early/staying on campus so late?
A: Nothing too bad— 8 a.m. Latin.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you have received in life, and how have you lived up to it?
A: Everyone has a mom who wants people to treat their kid kindly. If you don’t want to be kind, at least remember their moms.

Q: On a regular day what does your commute to school look like? Do you enjoy it? If not, what are some ways you make it more bearable?
A: It’s usually taking the bus to school and work. I try not to drive too much.

Q: In what way have you engaged in the college experience that you are most proud of?
A: I’m a member of Eta Sigma Phi! It’s a classics club!

Q: What do you feel like is the most underrated building or place on campus?
A: I love the CTIHB, it’s full of so many great resources.

Q: What is your dream career? What steps are you taking to get there?
A: I want to be a lawyer, and going to college is my first step!

Q: If you could study abroad anywhere on earth, where would you go and why?
A: Egypt. I’ve always loved the ancient cultures there and learning about the religions. It’s my dream spot.

Q: Would you rather have back to back classes from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. one day a week or have one two-hour class every day of the week, including weekends?
A: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.—that way I can have a whole week to reset!

Q: If you could go back and tell just one thing about your college experience to your past self on your first day at the U, what would you tell yourself?
A: Don’t be afraid to make friends. Everyone else here is looking for the college experience too, and the worst thing someone can say is no!
