Humanities students gain valuable, career-ready skills through their coursework and co-curricular programs. Internships offer an essential opportunity to apply these skills in real-world settings, explore potential career paths, and gain professional experience. For many students, completing an internship is a key step in successfully transitioning from college to the workplace.

Internship: The Daily Utah Chronicle (Chrony)

Role: Writer

I took this internship because I had a big interest in photography and journalism. I decided to join The Daily Utah Chronicle in early 2025 because I had a friend who also works there, and it was a good career step for me. I applied to be a writer and a photographer and got an interview with the photo director who offered me a role as a photographer

The Chrony has been a great experience. Everyone is really nice and I’m getting firsthand experience with writers and editors. Next semester I want to continue with the paper and now that I have more journalism experience, possibly apply for a writing position. This opportunity also showed me that I have an interest in photojournalism as well as writing. I still want to be a writer, but this has given me a better look at what I enjoy within journalism.

Internship: International Rescue Committee

Role: Digital Inclusion Intern

I am interning at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) this semester, and I am really enjoying it. I’ve volunteered with IRC in the past and enjoyed it, so when I saw there was an opportunity to do more within the organization, I took it right away. I work on the digital inclusion team, which means we help clients who have newly immigrated to the U.S. find their way around the technology that they will encounter on a day-to-day basis. This includes Zoom calls with caseworkers, basic search engines for finding job opportunities, and guidance on registering their children in school.

This aligned with a personal goal of mine to help immigrants, especially those who are a little older, gain confidence in their tech skills. I am an immigrant and a child of immigrants, so I enjoy helping, knowing that my mom is in the same shoes. She is not at all confident in her technology skills, so I want to help people like her and take those skills to help her at home as well.

I am comfortable enough with my team and direct supervisor to voice my opinions because I am met with positivity. There is a level of comfort when I'm in the office because everyone is easy to talk to and willing to help out. My job requires professionalism every day, especially when I am working on a client’s file. These files contain everything, from addresses to social security numbers. It’s critical that I handle client information with care.

Internship:The Daily Utah Chronicle (Chrony)

Role: Copy Director

My internship with the Daily Utah Chronicle has been engaging and helpful to my career. I oversee the entire copyediting desk, which means that I ensure that every article published for the Chrony follows the AP guidelines. I also ensure that every article is fact checked to make sure every statement we make is correct in everything but opinion pieces. I have contributed to my team by setting daily deadlines, making specific schedules tailored to students' availability, and setting standards within my copy desk to make sure everything is done according to standards.

I have implemented multiple communication strategies this year by learning how to approach certain people with different issues that arise. I have gained a better sense of leadership and responsibility with this internship, and it has taught me how to be a leader. This experience has enhanced my ability to not only work across roles, but to also explore different ideas. For example, I attend weekly meetings on how to improve my desk, and at these meetings I learn more about art pieces, even though I am most interested in our sports pieces. If I could give one piece of advice to other students exploring similar opportunities, I would say never be afraid to ask questions! I got much better at my internship by asking questions and knowing what was expected from me, and how I can be the best at that.

Internship: Nexstar Media Group

Role: Intern

I’ve been an intern with Nexstar Media group and Good Things Utah (GTU) for about two months, and I have greatly enjoyed it. I was initially drawn to this internship after taking a tour at the ABC4 Utah studio in one of my journalism classes. They mentioned their internships, and I decided to apply over the summer. This internship has been great for me as it really aligns with my personal goals of working in television journalism and gaining more experience in the journalism field.

My responsibilities during the internship have been different depending on the day. Most days I get in and look at the schedule for what is coming up on the show. I then ensure that I have all the correct social media accounts for our guests that day and take note of when I should grab pictures for social media. I then go with the producers and hosts for a meeting with the camera crew on what we are filming live that day. My next responsibilities usually include helping get the hosts mic'd up and welcoming each guest back in a timely manner. I will also bring back and set up any props a guest has brought for their segment, and I alert the film crew when sets need to be moved for props. Afterwards, I help set up the podcast episode and get started working on articles. This is my favorite part as I get to recap some segments of the show in an article for the ABC4/GTU website. It is a great experience to have a byline on the ABC4 Utah website!

This internship has taught me a lot about communication skills as it is a lot of talking to people and ensuring they have what they need for the show to go smoothly. I am building relationships collaboratively by asking questions both about the workplace and the experience of my supervisors and how they came into their position. Some moments definitely call for professionalism, like when a guest makes changes, so it's important to keep composure and ensure everyone gets what they need. I would strongly recommend this internship to any student looking to get more journalism or public relations experience. This internship is enjoyable, super interactive, and you get to work with the kindest and most creative people. I have loved my internship so far!

Internship: IFEZ (Incheon Free Ecomonic Zone)

Role: Global Content Intern

During my internship at the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) as a Global Content Intern, I’ve been working as a producer in the video production team. My main role is to plan and organize shoots, from developing concepts during pre-production to coordinating the filming process. As a producer, I’ve learned that even with a clear vision, things often change on set. Sometimes, team members suggest directions I didn’t initially intend to take. At first it was frustrating, but I soon realized that this internship is about teamwork, creating one video together as a group. By respecting each other’s ideas and incorporating suggestions that align with the original purpose, I saw how our collaboration could make the final product stronger and help everyone feel more confident and involved.

Beyond production, I also design YouTube thumbnails for our videos. Since thumbnails play a big role in attracting viewers, I sometimes feel pressure when the views don’t meet expectations. However, my teammates always encourage me and remind me that success comes from our collective effort. I truly appreciate their support and feel lucky to work with such positive and talented people.

One memorable experience was filming at the Jajangmyeon Museum. We needed to secure permission for indoor shooting, and the museum was quite far away from our main location. Managing the logistics was tricky. It taught me that in the creative field, efficiency and flexibility in working out the details can be important. This internship has not only developed my technical and creative skills but also helped me grow as a more adaptable and collaborative producer.
