Karin Baumgartner Wins FL-A-CH Award
Karin Baumgartner, Associate Professor of German in the Department of World Languages & Cultures, has won this year’s FL-A-CH (Fürstentum Liechtenstein, Austria, Switzerland) award from the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). This award honors excellence in the teaching of the language and cultures of Austria, the German-speaking areas of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Südtirol in the US. Over the course of her career, Dr. Baumgartner has organized a range of guest lectures here at the University Utah with writers and translators from Switzerland and she has developed a webinar on “Incorporating Switzerland into the Curriculum. ” Her co-edited volume From Multiculturalism to Hybridity: New Approaches to Teaching Modern Switzerland (2010) provides information and analyses of Swiss cultural identity, politics, and a range of writers and artists. She won best article prize for her 2012 essay “‘Ich kam unter die Schweizer.’ Teaching Switzerland as a Multi-Ethnic Society.” Dr. Baumgartner will be honored at the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Convention in Boston later this year.
