Nina Feng, University of Utah, Wins 2017 CCCC Scholars for the Dream Travel Award

Nina Feng, a PhD student in English who is emphasizing Writing & Rhetoric Studies, has been awarded The 2017 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Scholars for the Dream Travel Award. The CCCC is a constituent organization within the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The CCCC sponsors this award to encourage scholarship by historically underrepresented groups. Nina is one of ten recipients of this prestigious award.

The award selection committee considers originality of research, significance of pedagogical or theoretical contributions to the field, and potential for larger, subsequent projects. Nina’s research focuses on game design, specifically "gamification." Nina said “For education, I’ve realized the possibilities that abound for student engagement and storytelling. In my pilot study, I integrated video game elements into the writing classroom, transforming it into a game space. I’m especially interested in the use of narrative, not only for immersion, but for creating a context where students might engage in spatial storytelling, building individual narratives through various aspects of the game space. I also believe game design for the classroom has the potential to encourage the development of anti-racist pedagogy, which is what informs my own work.”
