Fall 2025 Undergraduate Research Awards
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
The Office of Undergraduate Research selects scholars to receive a stipend for working with a faculty mentor on research. Students complete a proposal to apply for this award. Fall 2025 award winners and faculty mentors in the College of Humanities:

Joan Boulds is a sophomore majoring in Linguistics and will be working with faculty mentor Shannon Barrios (Linguistics) on a project titled Effects of Accentism on Second-Language Acquisition of Pronunciation.

Camilla Cloward is a senior pursuing a double major in Middle East Studies and Political Science and is working with faculty mentor Annie Fukushima (Ethnic Studies) on a project titled The Use of Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War in the Palestine/Isreal Conflict.

Jarely Cruz is a junior majoring in Linguistics and is working with faculty mentor Rachel Hayes-Harb (Linguistics) on a project titled The Perception of Accents and Learning a New Language’s Pronunciation.

Alexander Hill is a senior pursuing a major in Writing and Rhetoric Studies and is working with faculty mentor Jonathan Stone (Writing and Rhetoric Studies) on a project titled Humans of Herriman: A Model for Youth-Driven Community Storytelling.

Natalia Lopez is pursuing a major in Humanities with a concentration in Latina/o/x studies and will be working with faculty mentor Ed Muñoz (Ethnic Studies) on a project titled Latinx Criminal Justice Professionals.

Ezra Moser is a senior double majoring in Writing and Rhetoric Studies and Data Science and is working with faculty mentor Maureen Mathison (Writing and Rhetoric Studies) on a project titled Tracking the Arc of a Subdiscipline Since its Inception, 1971-2021.

Jade Ramirez-Barraza, an Economics major working on a Linguistics minor and a Computational Linguistics Certificate, is working with faculty mentor Yang Wang (Linguistics) on a project titled Learning Non-Local Syntactic Dependencies via Probabilistic Finite-State Tree Automata.

Chloe Richards, an honor student double majoring in International Studies and Linguistics, will collaborate with faculty mentor KuanYi Chao (World Languages and Cultures) on a project titled The Process of Standardizing Chinese and the Impact of Minority Language Retention and Education.

Randa Viets is studying Linguistics and working with faculty mentor Aniello De Santo (Linguistics) on a project titled An Experimental Investigation of Computational Theories of Quantifier Verification.

Simone Arai Wiatrak is studying Communication and Ethnic Studies and is working with faculty mentor Tae Kyoung Lee (Communication) on a project titled Perceived Health, Susceptibility, and Responsibility: A Survey-Based Approach.
Dee Foundation Scholarship
The Lawrence T. Dee and Janet T. Dee Foundation was established by Lawrence Taylor and Janet Teller Dee in 1971 for the purpose of promoting charitable activities in Ogden and the surrounding area. It remains a family foundation dedicated to furthering the growth and well-being of the people of northern Utah.

Early Exploration Scholars Program
The Early Exploration Scholars Program fosters student connections with faculty mentors. Students who are selected for the program receive a scholarship to explore the research offerings at the University of Utah. For Fall 2025, three Humanities Students were selected for the program and scholarship.
