The College of Humanities and Department of World Languages and Cultures are pleased to announce an endowed scholarship established in memory of Edward Rivas.

The Edward Rivas Endowed Scholarship will support those pursuing a degree in Spanish, in hopes of encouraging students to “not give up and to keep trying,” said Edward’s mother, Mercedes Grimes.

“We are so grateful to the family of Edward Rivas for their generous support of this new scholarship. We are honored to be able to partner with them in helping Edward’s memory live on through the students whose lives this scholarship will change,” said Christopher Lewis, chair of the department of World Languages & Cultures.

Edward was pursuing his education at Salt Lake Community College, planning to attend the University of Utah to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. He had a love for the arts and enjoyed creating beautiful free hand drawings inspired by culture. His artwork serves as a reflection of his gentle spirit and a keepsake of his creativity.

A pivotal chapter of Edward’s life was his service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Monterrey, Mexico from 2013-15. This period of his life reinforced his dedication to helping others and showing compassion to those he served. Through his mission, he touched lives through his unwavering faith.

Edward fully embodied the values he held close and approached all with love and warmth. He lived to uplift and support those around him and carried with him a humble spirit and never sought out recognition. Edward Rivas passed away in July 2021, leaving behind the legacy of his kind spirit.

Mercedes Grimes said the scholarship is “giving me hope for others and it makes me very happy every time I get a letter from a student that has been a recipient of this scholarship.” Naomi Rowley, the 2025-26 scholarship recipient, said in her thank you letter, “Everyone should have the resources and help in order to pursue an education. This scholarship makes it possible for me to pursue my education.”

“This scholarship is a testament to both Edward’s life and the strength of his family’s vision. Together, we are opening doors for students who will carry forward Edward’s legacy of compassion, creativity, and determination. Philanthropy has the power to transform lives, and the Edward Rivas Endowed Scholarship is a beautiful example of that truth,” said Morgan Stinson, Director of Development for the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Science.

Edward Rivas’ life was full of love, service and perseverance. His motto was, “Finish strong,” which he used for self-motivation as well as encouraging those around him to keep going. This scholarship gives opportunity to students and stands as a reminder of the values Edward stood for.
