Humanities ASUU Representatives | James VanLooy

The Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) is the official student government, composed of elected student leaders who represent and advocate on behalf of the student body. Structured similarly to the U.S. government, ASUU includes executive, legislative, and judicial branches that work together to provide student resources, host events and programs, and serve as a liaison between students and University administration. All enrolled students are automatically members of ASUU. In the College of Humanities, elected ASUU officials also serve as leaders in the Humanities Recognized Student Government (HUM-RSG).

Major(s): History

I chose the University of Utah after falling in love with the campus during a tour. I was especially excited about the internship opportunities offered through the Hinckley Institute of Politics and was honored to receive one. College was always part of my plan. Whether I pursued law, history, or a role in the public sector, I knew higher education would be essential to reaching those goals.

I’m currently majoring in history, a subject I’ve loved since I was a kid. For me, history is more than just the past, it’s a way of understanding the roots of today’s challenges and gaining insight into ourselves. It also builds critical real-world skills like research, analysis, and writing.

Outside the classroom, I’m a former member of the Marching Utes and speak German. Being part of the drumline introduced me to some of the best people I’ve ever met. One highlight was traveling to Denver with the band, where I formed strong bonds with fellow members. My Hinckley internship also took me to Washington, D.C., where I worked for Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson.
