HUMANITIES Conference Highlight | Ana Victoria Tavera

Ana Victoria Tavera
Program of Study: Master of Arts in Language Pedagogy in the Department of World Languages and Cultures
Conference/Event Name: The Southwest Council of Latin American Studies (SCOLAS)
Name of project/research: “La comunidad afrodescendiente en San José Rio Verde (La Boquilla), Oaxaca
Q: What are you passionate about? Did this conference/presentation correlate with that interest?
A: I'm passionate about teaching, but living outside my country has also sparked my curiosity to learn and understand the history of my homeland. This conference gives me the opportunity to share the information I gathered from a previous research investigation in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Q: How well have the classes you’ve taken prepared you for this conference/presentation?
A: I fell in love with a class during the spring semester last year. I was so interested in my research topic that I felt compelled to explore it further. With the encouragement and support of my professor, I applied for a research scholarship, which led to an amazing experience.
Q: Is there a specific project/assignment you worked on that lead you to this opportunity? If so, what was it?
A: Yes, during my Slavery and Gendered Bodies class, we had to write a research paper, which became the first step for me in pursuing this opportunity.
Q: Have you faced any obstacles or challenges during this conference/presentation If so, what?
A: Yes, timing. I had my MA final exam scheduled for the same week as my presentation.
Best advice received from a professor "Present what you know; nobody else has done the research you did."
Q: Is this something you would do again?
A: Yes. Conferences allow you the opportunity to network, boost your confidence and expose your ideas while receiving feedback from professionals in the field.
Q: Do you have any advice for other students looking into similar opportunities?
A: While it may seem intimidating to present in front of experienced researchers and professors, take the chance and embrace the opportunity to surround yourself with individuals who share your passion for the same field. This environment can inspire growth, foster valuable connections, and open doors to new perspectives that will enhance your own work. Don't hesitate to step outside your comfort zone – it's a chance to learn, collaborate, and grow.
Q: How did you apply for this opportunity? Walk us through the process please!
A: I first looked at the different conferences to see which one was the best fit for my topic. I made sure I was able to attend based on time, days and location. I looked at the application requirements and adjusted my abstract accordingly. Once accepted, I requested funds from my department and paid the registration fee. I made the necessary accommodations for the trip and made sure to collect all receipts as I will be getting refunded for it.
Q: What classes have been the most helpful in setting you up for success for this conference/presentation?
A: Slavery and Gendered bodies, and Lenguas en Contacto. While the second class had zero focus on my topic, my research assignment helped me by preparing me to understand how to research.
Q: What has been the biggest take-away from this experience?
A: I'm able to understand constant feedback and take constructive criticism for just that. I’ve also gained research skills and time management.
