Saba Getaneh Mekuria (she/her)
Double Major: International and Area Studies & Political Science
Research Topic: To what extent do cultural factors affect the response and viewpoint to international dilemmas and crises between countries?
During the first semester, how did learning about the College of Humanities and its disciplines help you frame your academic interests?
Going into my first year of college, I was uncertain about what path was right for me. Trying to choose a major and deciding what I truly wanted during my experience at the U was troubling. At orientation, they split up the group into colleges, and when I was placed into the College of Humanities. I assumed it was for the convenience of getting us in smaller teams. After speaking to the people in these groups, I realized we all shared the same goal; to help not only ourselves, but others, to grow. Humanities students have the capability of understanding, interpreting, and critiquing the human condition. This not only enhanced my understanding of the College of Humanities, but reassured any doubts I had when choosing my major. No matter the major, each student in Humanities has shared goals which makes the experience unforgettable.
How has being part of the Humanities Scholars program impacted your time at the university?
As a commuter student, one of my largest fears was missing the sense of community. The Humanities Scholar program showed me the opposite, creating a sense of belonging when I was surrounded by the scholars. We all came from diverse backgrounds, which allowed for and enhanced our authenticity. We all lifted each other in ways we never expected, giving me the chance to experience community on campus, even when I was far away.
What is one of the most impactful lessons or experiences you had during your time as a Humanities Scholar?
The way Professor Lepa Piquk Marinkovski taught students was amazing; she focused on growing your knowledge rather than focusing
on the grade you have by the end of the semester. By removing assignment weights,
I was able to feel free in expressing my thoughts on various discussions we had, while
still following criteria needed. This shifted the way I viewed college; I can expand
on what I already know and use that to learn so much more.
Can you describe how the program's mentor has contributed or influenced your college experience?
Lepa gave me clarity in uncertainty. She reminded the scholars how important our opinions and questions are. She had a bright view of college, and the future we are capable of having. Implementing these amazing viewpoint shifts in the Humanities Scholars class inspired us to soar. She not only helped us become better scholars, but to voice our own opinions through our research. I will aways have great appreciation for her dedication to this group.

During the first semester, how did learning about the College of Humanities and its disciplines help you frame your academic interests?
It was helpful to get exposure to other Humanities disciplines, like Philosophy and History. All the Humanities are ultimately connected; learning about different angles of study helped me understand my own English major better and helped inspire me to add a minor in History.
How has being part of the Humanities Scholars program impacted your time at the university?
I've met a lot of good friends through the Humanities Scholars class. The program is set up to encourage students to get to know one another and share ideas.
What is one of the most impactful lessons or experiences you had during your time as a Humanities Scholar?
Working with my classmate Austin to develop an hour-long presentation was challenging, but fun. We learned a lot about our topic and created a presentation we were both proud of while combining our interests.
Can you describe how the program's director has contributed or influenced your college experience?
Lepa has been very encouraging to us. She has always praised our individual voices and perspectives and given us tailored feedback on our research topics.
In what ways have you seen improvements in your critical thinking, writing, and problem-solving
skills since joining the program?
The program has been most helpful in teaching me how to conduct research projects. This includes building on the research of others and communicating the extent of this existing research to lay the groundwork for my new research.
How has the Humanities Scholars program influenced your academic and career aspirations?
The program has given me a glimpse into the life of academic professionals. It's shown me that this is an appealing career path for me.
