L2TReC Awarded Flagship Teacher Training Grant

The College of Humanities’ Second Language Teaching and Research Center (L2TReC) has been awarded a Flagship Teacher Training grant sponsored by the National Security Education Program and administered by The Institute of International Education. The Language Flagship is a partnership between the Department of Defense and Institutions of Higher Education, with the mission of creating new models of language learning that produce college graduates with professional-level proficiency in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili and Turkish. Through this particular grant, of which L2TReC is the sole awardee, The Language Flagship seeks to make available professional development opportunities to the community of faculty that provide foreign language training to Flagship students.

L2TReC will design a series of online modules and a 4-day workshop for Flagship faculty targeting primarily Arabic, Chinese and Russian, the largest Flagship languages, but open to all the other languages. The workshop will take place at the University of Utah in July 2016 with participants from all over the country. This is L2TReC’s second flagship grant. The Center already houses a Flagship Proficiency Initiative grant, currently in its second year, to assess the level of proficiency of post-secondary students in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Russian.
