Beverly Cheung (she/her)

Major(s): Communication

Minor: French

Location: Aix-en-Provence, France

Study abroad/CEA CAPA/IAU

Q: What drew you to this location?

A: My minor! I’ve been passionate about the French country since I was young, so I’ve been wanting to do this for my whole life.

Q: Does this relate to your major? If so, how?

A: My minor, yes. But my major is still connected. Communication is huge here and being able to navigate a different country with communication skills is essential.

Q: Does this program relate to your passions and interests? How? Which ones?

A: Yes! Both traveling and learning a new language are very important to me. I believe this experience will help me to grow in nearly every sense.

Q: How have your past experiences prepared you for this experience?

A: Taking years of French has prepared me for this. I’m not anywhere near fluent but I find my ability to communicate here is elevated by my education.

“You will never have this type of experience again. It’s more affordable than regular travel, you’re getting an education, and growing so much as a human.”

Q: What intercultural skills have you developed while learning abroad?

A: Already so many. Being able to navigate a different part of the world is tricky, and there are so many cultural differences some may not think of. Europe and America are vastly different because here you are surrounded by so many different countries, but in the US, we are limited to a couple surrounding ones. You see so much.

A: Understanding that simple things like manners and social norms are different here is essential. The proper ways in which to greet people, volume levels, etc.

Q: How has this experience prepared you for career progression and promotion?

A: Spending a chunk of time in such a different place prepares you for so many different situations. It makes you tougher as a person, more flexible, and more knowledgeable overall.

Q: What relationships have you developed with people within your program?

A: I’ve already made many new friendships with students all over the US. I hope to continue to befriend locals and those of different origins.

Q: What is your experience communicating with locals abroad? Are language barriers present? How do you handle those barriers?

A: There are some barriers, my French is far from fluent. With this, I learn so much every day which vastly speeds up the process of my learning. I am able to get around and do the things I need to do, but I will never stop trying to get better.

Q: Is this something you would do again? If so, what would you do differently?

A: Absolutely. Simple things like what to pack, how to spend money, how to prepare are essential.

Q: What is your advice for students preparing to go into a learning abroad experience?

A: Have copies of all your documents, have AirTags, do not overpack.

Q: Is there anything you would additionally like to share about this abroad experience?

A: I feel beyond fortunate to be here and experience the French life. It’s truly surreal. I recommend learning abroad 1000%
