Sophie Wayment-Peterson

Major(s): History; International Studies

Location: Global Eccles: New Zealand

Q: What drew you to this location?

A: I was drawn to New Zealand because of their beautiful landscape and culture. There was also the added benefit of Hobbiton (the Lord of the Rings Set) being on the itinerary, which was a huge deal for me.

A: This trip relates to my major because it gave me international experiences and I was able to learn a lot about the history of New Zealand.

Q: Does this program relate to your passions and interests? How? Which ones?

A: Yes! I LOVE museums and historical sites, and we were able to go to both. We also had a lot of free time, so I went to bookstores, antique shops, and art shows.

Q: How have your past experiences prepared you for this experience?

A: I have been abroad before, so it didn't feel very overwhelming, but New Zealand itself is very similar to the United States in lots of ways, so it felt a little bit like home away from home.

“I learned a lot about how to be respectful of other people's cultures while still participating with them. We were told that the best way to learn about someone's culture is to ask!”

Q: How has this experience prepared you for career progression and promotion?

A: This experience gave me a new understanding of the importance of global business and propping up not only ourselves but others.

Q: Did any specific aspects of this experience stand out to you? Which ones? Why?

A: One thing that really stood out to me was how friendly everyone is. It can be difficult to travel abroad because there are always fears of being treated like an outsider, but I will always remember this as a place where I always felt welcome and never concerned about fitting in.

Q: What relationships have you developed with people within your program?

A: I made lots of amazing friends that made it so much more enjoyable. It's easy to find people to do things with if you look for them!

A: The food was AMAZING! If you like any sort of seafood, you will love it here. They also have amazing fruit and cow products, so there is something for everyone.

Q: Is learning abroad something you would recommend?

A: Yes! I have done two learning abroad trips now and I loved both of them. I would recommend, honestly, going somewhere you never thought you'd end up. Although England or France or Italy are great, you may go there later! Try to see things you may not otherwise see, and it will be an experience you will never forget.

Q: What is your advice for students considering the opportunity to study abroad?

A: Do it! I don't think you'll regret it.
