Transfer Student SPOTLIGHT | Lea Cinq-Mars
Lea Cinq-Mars (she/her)
Major: Philosophy
Certificates: Social Justice Advocacy; Criminology
When Lea Cinq-Mars transferred to the University of Utah from Utah State University in 2023, she wasn't sure what to expect. Now, in her third and final year of pursuing a Philosophy degree with certificates in Social Justice Advocacy and Criminology, she's found that the transition opened doors she didn’t know existed.
"The transfer process was smooth and easier than I expected. All my credits transferred," Cinq-Mars said. “The new student/transfer orientation prepared me well for this new chapter.” Despite the university's size, she discovered intimate class settings and professors deeply invested in student success.
“My professors have been very supportive and invested.”
Cinq-Mars said the university's ample support system helped her navigate initial challenges like campus logistics, transit, and parking. The transfer also connected her with new ideas, people, sites, and valuable internship and scholarship opportunities. Transferring has accelerated her academic progress, allowing her to graduate in three years instead of four while participating in internships that shape her future career path.
"I'd encourage other students thinking about transferring to go for it," she said. "The U has so much to offer transfer students."
The College of Humanities supports transfer students through orientation programs, academic resources, and professional development. The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students holds an annual National Transfer Week to highlight the support for those making the change.
