Humanities Day 2024


 

Humanities Day is October 26, 2024, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when high school students from across Utah will be able to attend a variety of faculty presentations and learn more about what life is like in the College of Humanities at the University of Utah.

Future students and their supporters can start the day with early morning tours of campus and housing, connect with other colleges at the U, and meet with financial aid or other campus resources through Discover the U.

Humanities Day 2023Our first annual Humanities Day was held in October 2023. Students from 14 Utah high schools gathered to explore the College of Humanities departments and programs such as undergraduate programming in Communication, English, History, International and Area Studies, Linguistics, Philosophy, World Languages and Cultures, and Writing and Rhetoric Studies.

Participants chose three mini-lectures presented by award-winning faculty from across the college to attend:

  • Speech Production and Perception and the Acquisition of Novel Sound Contrasts by Dr. Shannon Barrios, Linguistics
  • What is Grammar, Anyway? by Dr. Rachel Hayes-Harb, Linguistics
  • The Importance of Engaged Philosophy: Ethics at the Beginning and End of Life by Dr. Leslie Francis, Philosophy
  • Myth and Technology: The Quest for the Golden Fleece by Dr. Alexis Christensen, World Languages and Cultures
  • Writing from Personal Digital Artifacts by Dr. Christie Toth, Writing and Rhetoric Studies
  • College Success: Communication, Curiosity and Connections by Dr. Natasha Seegert, Communication
  • Sound Waves and Speech Acoustics: How We Use Our Bodies to Talk by Dr. Rachel Hayes-Harb, Linguistics 

Karen presentingKaren Marsh Schaeffer, director of student success and engagement, also led an information session for participants and their guests, showcasing opportunities for involvement through student organizations, internships, and research programs in the College of Humanities.
