Internship: Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind

Alyssa Mott, a Strategic Communication major at the U, has been working on an internship with the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) this semester. Mott says she's been able to apply the principles learned in her courses to her work at her internship when writing concise stories. "The classes I have taken so far have been great in my preparation for this internship," she said. "COMM 1130 - Media Writing walks students through the differences between academic writing and writing for a media audience."

Mott's internship at USDB has given her insight into a future PR career. It has also shown her the importance of time management, creating quality work, and teamwork. She has further developed her skills in media writing, event photography, and interpersonal communication, calling it a fun and unique experience. She hopes to continue growing her skills.

Photo of a DSLR camera One experience Mott had during her internship included accompanying three students from USDB to the Bountiful Lions shooting range. While the students were shooting rifles, she was shooting with her camera, capturing exciting shots to share the students' experience. She said she had to get creative with her photography due to the shooting range's restrictions but found it awesome to meet the volunteers at Bountiful Lions.

Wow! It's great to see real-world applications from classes offered here at the U. Thanks, Alyssa!
