Humanities Internship Spotlight
John Leone | Qirui Yang | Cara Mattos

Humanities students gain valuable, career-ready skills through their coursework and co-curricular programs. Internships offer an essential opportunity to apply these skills in real-world settings, explore potential career paths, and gain professional experience. For many students, completing an internship is a key step in successfully transitioning from college to the workplace.

Internship:  Daily Utah Chronicle

My name is John Leone, and my internship with the Daily Utah Chronicle has been an amazing experience. As the editor of the sports desk, my role is to manage the writers within my desk and ensure that the quality of all stories meets the Daily Utah Chronicle standards.

As someone who is hoping to work in the sports media industry, being the sports editor has been a tremendous help to my résumé and my experience as a writer. Thanks to the Daily Utah Chronicle, I have had the opportunity to attend various sporting events with behind-the-scenes access. Motocross, basketball, soccer and football have been some of my favorite events to attend and report on.

John on America First FieldWhile this internship period is only focusing on the Summer, I plan on keeping this position for as long as I am attending the U. Writing for the Daily Utah Chronicle has been everything I would have hoped for. I highly recommend it to anybody who enjoys writing, sports, or both like me.

Internship: Archauto

I am interested in public relations and brand management and this internship with Archauto allowed me to experience some basic tasks I will face in my future career. I was attracted to this company’s operating philosophy that they are more like a “family” and this philosophy was realized since I could work on things I was interested in and could offer other departments a helping hand if they needed.

My main job is to write news reports and edit videos for social media channels; we prepare five videos a week and post the videos the next week. Since I have had news writing and video production classes before, I was able to apply the ideas and skills I learned in classes to my internship position. I could feel how I added value to the company, and this made me proud of myself and my work.

I also love design, which is the reason I took several web design and brand design classes before, and I’m also familiar with Adobe’s apps. So when other departments need festival posters and advertisements, I’ll design for them. It will take me hours and hours to create and revise it based on their requirements, but I feel happy about it.

Internship:  Lunar Solar Group

What drew me to this internship at Lunar Solar Group was the opportunity to work at the intersection of sales and marketing—two areas I’m deeply interested in as I pursue a career in the Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) and Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) space. I was especially excited to join a team that works directly with fast-growing consumer brands and uses data-driven strategies to drive growth. This internship has given me the chance to see how outbound sales and marketing outreach actually convert into business conversations, and how research, messaging, and timing all play a role in that process.

As a Strategic Communications major, this experience has helped me apply what I’ve learned in class to real-world business scenarios—from writing copy that converts prospects into sales, to building pitch decks, and learning how to qualify leads. I’ve also been able to continue to explore tools like Apollo, Clay, and Salesforce, which gave me hands-on experience in marketing automation and prospecting. This internship has not only sharpened my communication skills- but also helped me feel more confident about the direction I want to go after graduation.
