Humanities Internship Spotlight
Ava Isaac | Jack Ongman | Lauren Pettigrew

Humanities students gain valuable, career-ready skills through their coursework and co-curricular programs. Internships offer an essential opportunity to apply these skills in real-world settings, explore potential career paths, and gain professional experience. For many students, completing an internship is a key step in successfully transitioning from college to the workplace.

Internship:  Utah PGA

During my internship with the Utah PGA Junior Section, I engaged in the fields of event management and golf tournament operations. I contributed to the setup and execution of tournaments across Utah's picturesque landscapes, gaining valuable insights into the logistics of tournament organization, including scoring systems and the management of pace of play.

A highlight of my role was interacting with junior players and their families, which not only enhanced my communication skills but also allowed me to build meaningful connections with parents, competitors, and volunteers. My involvement in the Drive, Chip, and Putt events and the state championship tournaments highlighted the dedication required to manage large-scale competitions.

Additionally, I developed professional relationships with head golf professionals and staff at various courses, which enriched my understanding of the golfing industry and expanded my network within Utah's golf community. Working alongside a dedicated team of colleagues committed to promoting golf made this internship a genuinely enriching experience.

Internship: Capitol Records/ Universal Music Group

During my internship at Capitol Records in the A&R (Artists and Repertoire) department, I gained firsthand experience in the music industry that truly deepened my passion for discovering and developing new talent. What drew me to this internship was my love for music and my desire to understand the behind-the-scenes work that goes into launching an artist’s career. This role aligned closely with my interest in the music business, allowing me to apply concepts from my coursework directly to real-world scenarios. I was able to participate in scouting emerging artists, analyzing trends, and collaborating on creative strategies to support artist growth, which made the experience both exciting and educational.

The internship helped me build valuable skills such as market research, communication, and project management. One project I particularly enjoyed was assisting in the review and curation of demo submissions where I learned to critically evaluate music based on both artistic merit and commercial potential. Although balancing internship responsibilities with schoolwork was sometimes challenging, I developed effective time management strategies that helped me stay on track. This experience not only confirmed my interest in a career in A&R but also equipped me with a clearer understanding of the industry’s fast-paced environment. I would highly recommend this type of internship to anyone passionate about music and eager to gain practical experience in artist development.

Internship:  The New Heart for Life Community

My internship with The New Heart for Life Community was such an amazing experience for me. Each moment working with the founder, Dan Williams, taught me invaluable lessons that I will carry forward in my career as well as in my daily life. I was drawn to this internship due to the message behind it. My studies in health, entrepreneurship, and communication all coincided in this internship to best allow me to provide my insights as well as to help me gain the most from my time with The New Heart for Life Community. I believe that all of my courses thus far during my time at the University of Utah have played a major role in preparing me for this intern role. I have even found that certain teachings coincide with the same things that Dan Williams follows. Even in our primary interview, Dan referenced a book I was currently working through in one of my Entrepreneurship courses, a course I hadn’t expected to coincide so much with a health marketing internship.

Through my experience in my intern position with The New Heart for Life Community, I gained an irreplaceable set of skills and a community of like-minded individuals that I will surely value for years to come. The lessons I learned and projects I worked through have well prepared me for what the future may throw my way. This was such an amazing experience thanks to the support of the community, the strong message, and the dedication of the founder, Dan . Dan is someone I see as a mentor and will continue to look to for advice and mentorship throughout my college career and further. Some challenges I faced during this internship were finding the time to best apply myself. I did a great job applying myself to this position, but I noted times when time management was slightly tricky. While I always made sure to put my internship first, rearranging other important events was something that I will need to address moving forward. In such a fast-paced world, this is a skill I will surely benefit from developing further.

Overall, I had such an amazing experience working as an intern with The New Heart for Life Community. From the expertise of Dan to the caring community that has been built within, I have gained valuable experience, and I will continue to learn and share my experience with The New Heart for Life Community.
