Humanities Internship Spotlight
Emily Kelley | Teetad Govitviwat | Bella Vezzani

Humanities students gain valuable, career-ready skills through their coursework and co-curricular programs. Internships offer an essential opportunity to apply these skills in real-world settings, explore potential career paths, and gain professional experience. For many students, completing an internship is a key step in successfully transitioning from college to the workplace.

Internship:  Dunn Psychological Corporation

My internship with Dunn Psychological Corporation provided an opportunity to step into the medical field from an administrative perspective. While psychology is not necessarily something I want to pursue, this opportunity offered direct exposure to private practice work settings. I was responsible for supporting day-to-day office functions, such as scheduling appointments and maintaining patient records. These all play a critical role in making sure clients receive consistent, quality care.

I appreciated that this internship reinforced how important professionalism, confidentiality, and communication are in the real world. I had spent my undergrad studying these skills, but this internship allowed me to practice them firsthand. Being in the small, focused setting of Dunn Psychological, I was able to build strong relationships and receive personalized work advice. I believe that this experience helped me be more confident in healthcare environments. I think it is really important for students to stay open to learning opportunities even if it is not something they may have an interest in; there are always lessons to be learned.

Internship: Daily Utah Chronicle

I was drawn to the internship at the Daily Utah Chronicle because I had an interest in journalism and reporting on my local community. It taught me vital writing and interviewing skills, made me more receptive to appealing to audiences, and helped me become more familiar within my community through professors, clubs, start-ups and other organizations that I spoke with for a story.

I was lucky to be brought onboard by a talented and outgoing team of student editors who taught me a lot about news writing. They guided me through every step and made sure I had adequate resources to succeed all the way through. I also learned from reading their published stories and from fellow writers.

I'm glad I took this opportunity to grow and learn about myself and about the field of news writing. I gained connections and was awarded scholarships through this organization, and I would gladly keep doing this in my senior year.

Internship:  Scout Grace Design

My internship experience was a ton of fun. I was working closely with people and shadowing them as they inspected a home to see how they would design its interior. I was also able to watch a lot of planning for parties and helped out with that aspect.

I didn’t encounter too many obstacles, and I could see a career in something similar being something that I would pursue long-term. The people I learned from are amazing and they made it enjoyable for me to learn from them. I gained a ton of different skills from this opportunity. If I were to give some advice to other students, I would say maybe try something that you wouldn't normally do. Not only does this give you the opportunity to learn about something else, but it is also a great resume builder for down the road.

The thing I most enjoyed about my internship was seeing people's visions come to life. It was so enjoyable when a client had an idea in mind and then got to see it come to life and be everything they hoped for and more.
